My future son-in-law recently bought a new home. Of course as is the case now a days, the builder put bermuda sod in the front and nothing (per say)in the back. He lives right on the edge of what is considered acceptable for tall fescue. Anyways, he tilled, added some organic material, put down starter fertilizer and the seeded. He raked before seeding, but did not do a very good job. Anyways, the grass is coming in, and actually looks pretty good. He is giving it plenty of water. The problem is that he did not rake it well enough, and he did not roll it to give him a flat yard. On top of that, during tilling he cut his cable and when they came to replace it they left it with ruts. Is it too late to roll it? Any other suggestions on how to get it nice and flat. Filling in is not an option since it is too late to plant more seed. Any help appreciated.

If fescue is just marginal in the area, then spring is a horrible time to seed it. He might keep some of it alive through the summer, but he's got a fall reseeding in his future. As for what to do now - just wait. Anything you do is going to damage the new grass. Once it has grown enough to be mowed 3-4 times, he can roll it. He can also start sprinkling soil on the low spots at that point. As long as he adds only 1/4" at a time, the grass will grow right through it just fine. Otherwise, he can just wait until after summer and then level before he reseeds.

I know he shouldn't have seeded when he did, but the back yard was nothing but dirt. Hopefully it will get him by for the summer with lots of water. He plans on re-seeding in the fall. When is the best time? He lives in the upstate of South Carolina. Some people in the area have beautiful fescue lawns and some of the local industries do as well. The place i work for one. Course they hydro-seeded. Thanks for the info.

I live in Raleigh, and we can usually start seeding fescue in September. The seeding window is actually really long - well into November and even december some years. The best strategy is usually to seed as soon as the heat breaks. That way, you have plenty of time to reseed any bare or thin spots.
