Need to seed but weeds starting...

I've been getting ready to seed some rather large dead spots in my front yard. I raked all the dead stuff away and even went over it with a small, manual core aerator to loosen things up nicely. So I'm just about ready to spread some seed and now the broadleaf weeds are starting all over the lawn: dandelions and that purple, clovery stuff. There aren't a ton yet and what're there could probably be pulled by hand. But there's bound to be a bunch more coming, right?

I'd love to spray some weed killer but won't that hamper the seedlings if I seed afterwards? Surely I could spray now, wait 2 or 3 weeks and then seed, but I feel like I'm already behind by just seeding now. And if this year is anything like last year and I don't spray, I'm going to have a yardful of weeds by June. That's why I have the dead spots to begin with.

Any advice? Thoughts? Thanks.

Only a few things comes to mind, Round up and Tenacity. If you spray the bare areas with Round-up anything green should die, and you can seed hours after application. Also Tenacity is another herbicide you can use prior to seeding areas, which will keep most weeds at bay while allowing your grass seed to germinate and mature. Tupersan can also be applied prior to seeding which will prevent crabgrass from germinating, but it is relatively expensive, and it lasts only about a month.

Wait til fall! Just keep killing all the weeds now, feed your grass it may fill in some of the spots. Sit it out until summer is over. In fall when you plant your grass seeds you will have hardly any weeds come up at the same time and the new grass can grow without competing.

Worked for me. I have ZERO weeds in my lawn now and i did this 2 years ago. Just go out and get some weed b gon max and a weed hound and just destroy the weeds before they produce any seeds (otherwise next year you will have x10 the amount of weeds). Good luck.

Seems a shame to waste the entire growing season by waiting until fall to seed. Why not go ahead and seed, establish as much grass as you can, then do a weed and feed. Wait 4 weeks and overseed again. I pull weeds and little clumps of "junk" that appear, all the time while I'm cutting. I toss a little seed in if the spot is large enough to notice. If there's a kid in the neighborhood that wants to make a few bucks, give him/her a couple bags to fill...no chemicals to wait for, loose soil, and all YOU have to do is seed and water!
