Broadcast Spreaders off by a lot normally?

With the suggestion of members on here, I dumped the drop and bought the Scotts Broadcast DLX w/Edgeguard.

Put down an application tonight of the Green Light Crabgrass Preventer 2 with Dimension using the 2 lbs of product per 1000 sq ft which was setting 4 for my spreader.

It ended up taking me almost 4 bags (40 lbs 20,000 sq ft coverage) to do about 6000 sq ft. By my calculation I should have used less than 2 bags. Is my new spreader really off by that much or am I missing something here? When I was using my Scotts drop spreader to apply fertilizer last year it took me about the same ratio.

I am completely lost. The spreader goes from 2-15 and the turn knob is set grooves in the back so it is not just a spring tension that could error as much.

A lot of us will use the settings as a guide, not a promise. You can calibrate yours, but know that you have to calibrate it for every product. All the products flow differently so learn to do this.

Start by setting where you think it should be. Pour a measured amount (1 pound) into the spreader. Measure off 1,000 square feet and start spreading. Before you have covered half the area or dumped half the product you should have a good idea how well the spreader is doing. Make an adjustment and try again.

When I first spread corn gluten meal with a drop spreader, I ended up opening it all the way and going over the area twice just to get 15 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Now I spread it by hand, but I would not try that with chemical ferts.

Yes, the spreader setting is just a guide. If I see that the fertilizer is going too fast, I either lower the setting or walk faster. I sure wouldn't use 4 bags when two would do the job. Somewhere around a quarter/half a bag, I would have adjusted something.

Uh, yeah. I might have made that same mistake long ago. Heh, heh! For me it wasn't bags of fertilizer because my lawn wasn't that big, but it was a full bag for only 1,000 square feet. Geeze, how could I have not realized that????
