How to thicken sod

The sod in my yard has really thinned out over the last couple years in spots,is it possible to over seed sod? Does anyone know what type of grass they use for sod in SD? What other recommendations do you guys have to thicken it up?

One would think in a place like SD it would be a fescue as their would be no reason to use a warm weather grass, such as Zoysia or Bermuda that far north.

Shouldn't be any reason you couldn't overseed with a fescue blend.

If you have a Agricultural County Extension in your area, bring a handful of blades to them. They should be able to tell you what it is. You may also try and post some close up pic's on the forum trail to look at.

The first step is determining what type of grass you have. If you have tall fescue sod as TNJDM suggested, then you will need to overseed. Tall fescue isn't the best choice for South Dakota since the low winter temps can lead to cold kill. If you have Kentucky bluegrass, a better choice in my opinion, then you can overseed, but KBG is a spreading grass that should thicken over time, but only if it's well feed, properly watered, and your soil is good. Some close up pics would really help if you don't know what type of grass you have. If you can't take pics then look at the blades. Tall fescue has a pointed blade, no central midrib, and obvious ridges that run lenghwise. KBG has a boat shaped fused leaf tip, a central midrib, and no obvious ridges.
