| Last summer my lawn took a beating. We had very high temps in KC and we were on vacation so the sprinklers didnt get adjusted while we were gone. I overseeded in the spring and this spring there is some grass coming up but it is still short. I started watering this week because it has been dry so I am hoping this new grass will take off. I have also put down some high nitrogen fertilizer that I had left over. Is there anything else I should be doing?
Also, I had some K31 fescue clumbs in my lawn so I killed it with roundup. The grass died.. I decided to replace it with tall fescue sod (only had a few spots to replace). when I dug up the dead grass I found some white grubs. This was in the same area where I had the massive dead grass last summer. Should I treat for grubs? |

| That's's kind of funny, I had the exact same thing happen to my lawn last year. Only I'm blaming it on my turkeys, but in reality I just forgot to water the dang thing and it just didn't grow back this year like I wanted to. Most of the time, going on vacation doesn't kill your lawn, unless the temperature is above 100° for several days or you have grubs. More than likely, your lawn was weakened by the Grubs, and then killed by a lack of watering. Grubs actually eat the taproots out on your lawn. They never actually kill your grass, but they make it a lot easier for your grass to die without water. it can depends on the type of grub that you have as to whether or not you should kill it them now or later. If they do their damage in the fall, then they are Japanese beetles. You should kill them after your new lawn gets established. If they are June beetles, you should probably kill them right away. my guess is that they are June beetles because it appears that they killed your lawn during the summer and not during the fall. the best time to kill Grubs is when they are actively feeding on your lawn. I wish you good luck! |
