| I live in south Louisiana and my lawn is a variety of wild grass and weeds. It is thinner than most lawns so when you walk in the house you track dirt. Some area get sun most of the day some areas get a little less due to the tree line and a two story house. I have a live oak and nothing grows around it for about 20 ft radius, though the area does get some sun because the tree itself doesn't have thick canopy.
What I want is thick grass. I don't really care what kind, I just wants something that covers the ground to the point you can't see the dirt, and will be aggressive enough to overtake everything else so it doesn't look like a hodgepodge of different grass. The yard is large so sodding is not really an option. What should I do? What type of grass should I get? When and what type of fertilizer should I use? |

| As soon as I saw you were from LA I, naturally, immediately thought you were from Lake Arrowhead. ;-) How large is large? Are you willing to water? I know you're in south LA but if you need to water some time, are you willing? How much work are you willing to do? Are you willing to mow it twice a week and fertilize heavily every month? Or not. When was the last time you fertilized and what did you use? The two main lawns in the south are bermuda and St Augustine. Everything else is out there in very small numbers. Bermuda is a fertilizer hog, only grows in full sun, and really needs lots of maintenance. St Augustine will grow under your live oak tree and up to the house, but it needs water or it will die. When bermuda goes without water it goes dormant and will come back quickly at the first rainfall. St Augustine will die and not come back at all. That takes a month of no water, so most people who are willing to water don't have trouble with that aspect of it. Both of these grasses spread nicely and will fill in eventually from a small start. Again, bermuda in full sun and St Aug in either sun or shade. Just nurse them along. I have a new home with some old gardens I'm reclaiming with grass. Patience is a virtue. |

| Large is 1 acre I don't mind watering if we are in a drought, but I would not want to do it weekly. Mowing frequently is not a problem, and I wouldn't mind fertilizing either. Last time I fertilized the yard was last year, Scott's Turf Builder. Define full sun. I tried seeding with Bermuda 2 years ago and it seemed to get crowded out by the wild stuff. The grass that seems to dominate where I actually have grass looks sort of like St Augustine but it isn't a running type grass and least I can't see any runners. The problem is it never seems to get thick and doesn't grow particularly well in the shade. The rest of the yard is different types of weeds I guess. I got sections that it has some type of clover though its round not clover if that makes any sense. |
