Woody weeds in my lawn

I have been battling these weeds for the last several years. I could use some help in identifying them and would love to hear thoughts on how to eradicate them. They are very difficult to remove as they have very long roots. Normally when I try to pull them they snap off at ground level and just grow back. The mower only keeps them in check. Not sure what to do at this point.

Wow, those are nasty looking...no idea what they are but you have come to the right spot.

Anybody want to take a guess? Are there any widely accepted remedies for weeds like these? Right now I've taken to stabbing the ground around a patch of them to loosen the soil to make root removal slightly less difficult. But I'm hoping there is an easier way as I have thousands of them.

Just to ask- you have trees around that area that drop acorns? I have oak trees that drop acorns and they take up root in my grass. If I do not pull soon, they start to look like miniature oak trees.

I have a large white oak in the backyard. However these don't look like oak seedlings I have seen. The leaves have serrated margins not lobed like an oak. But the majority of them are under the canopy of the oak. Strange?

That is where my problem areas always are with these things- under my oak canopies. My "seedlings" are serrated in shape while my canopy leaves are the more oval point shape. Not saying this is what's going on, but it sure sounds familiar ;o)

Thanks for the input, I guess I'll just continue with my manual extraction. I'm pulling about 50 a day, at this rate I should have it cleaned up in a few months!

I agree with the tree weed diagnosis. It is very common for new seedlings to have leaves which are different from mature leaves on the same plant. One that comes to mind from SoCal is "silver dollar" eucalyptus. When mature they have long slender leaves.

I second the motion that they're probably baby oak trees. Last spring we removed one of the backyard's 3 trees. The apple tree's stump remains for now. Since last year, I've probably pulled about 20 skinny woody-like shoots that keep emerging from the ground near the stump. They're probably baby apple trees. Some even emerge from the ground nearby the other, remaining apple tree. I don't recall seeing any shoots that I've had to remove by the pear tree. Last summer I saw squirrels feasting on the apples from the tree. Maybe the squirrels are messy eaters, leaving behind apple seeds on the ground, which later take root. (By the way, I'll be removing the stump with an axe later this year, including the first 12 inches of the stump that's hidden underground. I drilled holes in the stump, allowing the rain, snow, humidity, heat, and other elements to soften it up. Then I'll fill the hole with soil and zoysia sod. This method's a lot cheaper than renting a stump grinder.)
