A good seeding schedule even though I have poa

Hello,

I posted a while back trying to figure out what was in on my lawn and it was determined to most probably be poa.

I have read that it is usually a good idea to seed in fall but currently if I want to get rid of the poa I should apply a pre-emergent (ie corn gluten) in the fall. For good measure I will also apply some in the spring of next year. I was wondering the following. I figure it is probably a good idea to apply a pre-emergent to stop poa and other weeds however if I do it then I can't seed right? How should I do it if I would like to seed and also put weed prevent on my lawn? Who gets applied in spring and who gets applied in fall?

BTW FWIW I live in Quebec, Canada zone 5

Yes, you cannot seed until the preemergent barrier wears off. I believe in the other thread we determined you have poa trivialis. That is a perennial and preemergents don't control it. Also corn gluten meal has some preemergent effect, but it is not reliable, and not particular effective.

Ohh... I was under the assumption corn gluten would help. I find that a lot of the chemicals that people suggest can't be used here in Canada. I guess I'll have to search some more and see what other people north of the border are doing...

If that's your only option, then I would use it. I forgot about Canada's strict herbicide laws. Timing is critical with CGM, and I have read you will have better results with mutiple apps spread out a few weeks apart. There are a lot of sites on the web regarding CGM, I would do some research in order to get the best results possible.

I've never been able to figure CGM out. University studies indicate that it takes years of application for it to becoume effective as a preemergent. Once you have spent the time and money over a number of years, it seems it would hinder any seeding of grass.. Also CGM probally is going to do nothing about your trivalis as it is, as tiemco says, a perennial. Do read up on CGM before going that route. You may be better of just pulling up the patches of triv and overseeding with KGB, if that is what the rest of the lawn is.
