Weed Identification

I rented out my house (in Puget Sound) for a year and come back to find these weeks ALL OVER various parts of the yard---mostly where the drainage is bad.

What -are- they? And, more to the point... how do I KILL them for -real-? My lawn was pretty good until these showed up. They did -not- succumb to generic "weed n' feed."

Pulling them up -does work-, but they seem to reproduce at an ALARMING rate.

Weed 1

Weed 2

Weed 3

Weed 4

Weed 5

Weed 6

Ideas?

TIA,

---JC

It would help if those pictures worked.

You have some clover, looks like some creeping ivy, maybe some wild geranium. Not sure what some of the others are. In some of those pics, I'm not seeing much turf so when you get rid of the weeds, you may have some pretty thin spots.

You'll probably get a more expert opinion than mine on here but, if it was me, I'd immediately spray the lawn with a general broadleaf killer, like Weed B Gone. Clover can be pretty tough so I'd follow up with another spray in about two weeks. I didn't see any grassy weeds but if you have them, the Weed B Gone will probably not kill them.

It wouldn't hurt to get some fertilizer down to help what's left of your lawn. I don't like the weed and feeds. They aren't as effective as spraying the weed killer and laying down the fertilizer separately.

RE: Weed Identification - more info

Sorry, I missed the part where you said you put down weed n feed. Don't put down more fertilizer unless it has been at least a month since you used the weed n feed.

Not really sure what you have, the last ones look like parsley to me. Anyway this is how I treat weeds. Mix Weed B Gone Max and Weed B Gone Clover, Chickweed and Oxalis killer in the appropriate amount of water in a tank sprayer. Spot spray all the weeds you don't want. You might have to repeat in a week or so, and be sure to read all the directions. This works on the majority of weeds, and anything that ignores two or three sprays will need either Tenacity or Roundup.

Head to Tractor supply, buy a gallon of 2,4-d concentrate, it will be around 65% and about twenty bucks. This will make you 128 gallons if you mix one ounce per gallon. Should last you at least a few years.
If they still carry the ester kind, get that, its faster acting.

This will clear up your lawn very fast.

RE: Weed Identification

@ botanicalbill --- what is 2,4-d exactly? I'm in the Seattle area---never heard of 'Tractor supply.' Is this commonly available?

ALSO: I figured out that these are coming from a neighbour who's house was foreclosed on. The yard has gone JUNGLE. If it helps in IDing this thing... it's like a giant parsley when full grown. It can get over a foot tall with little yellow flowers.

RE: Weed Identification

2,4D is just a shorthand way of describing the active ingredient in most broadleaf weed killers. If you must know it is 2,4 dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (as well as amine derivatives). It is the active ingredient in Weed B Gone as well as other ones you will find at Home Depot.

RE: Weed Identification

Thanks. I'll give these a try. I normally don't want to use -any- chemicals (never really had to before), but 'desperate times' ... and so on.

So... if anyone is still reading: What -is- this giant parsley stuff with the little yellow flowers?
