I grew up in Texas where Bermuda is a grass of choice. I was always told that if you wanted to get rid of Bermuda, it is easy - just move. The stuff is like the cockroaches of the grass kingdom. There are some specific killers that work with varying success on Bermuda (do a lot of reading on this as they are rather costly and success really seems to vary) and time of year that it is applied seems to be important. If it is an established lawn, and you do kill it, de-thatching will be important. Don't try to till under the live stuff as that will just help it spread.

I am surprised that you have a lot of shade and bermuda, usually shade is the enemy of bermuda. The "natural" way to discourage it is to cut your lawn longer so there is ground shade and be sure to bag clippings (it can spread via seed heads and mowing throws those around). With a lot of shade, are you sure that it is bermuda?

Good luck trying to get rid of it! I think it will be a multi-year process.

Yes, I'm sure it's Bermuda. I guess maybe I don't have as much shade as I made it sound, sorry, although there is some shade, maybe that is why it isn't doing so well. I'll probably just keep the Bermuda and grin and bear it. I don't plan on keeping the house more than a couple of more years.
