I have lived in my house over 20 years. My back lawn was looking a bit rough but at least I had one. In 2010 had a company come in to completely redo-new soil, sod etc. 3 years ago. I have done everything i was supposed to do with it. For the first year it was beautiful. In 2011, I saw a lot of dead spots. It is now 2012 and I have NO LAWN. It is completely dead. Nothing came back and I am freaked. I cannot afford to spend another $3,000.00 to redo it. It is now a mass of weeds and that is all I am doing is pulling up hundreds of weeds every few days. I have spoken to the owner of the company three times and he has yet to show up-excuse after excuse. I don't know what to do.

Wow, that sucks. Some more information is needed. Where do you live (town and state)? What kind of grass did they sod with? What are your watering/fertilizing/herbicide schedules? Ever have a good soil test (not one you buy at Walmart or Home Depot)? At what height do you mow? Ever see patches or rings of discolored grass when it was alive?

I agree with tiemco - need all that info he asked for to help you. One thing though, whatever you did killed the lawn. The installation company is way out of the picture on this one. About once a month someone writes in saying they did everything right and then proceed to describe a terrible lawn care regimen. We're not going to judge you, but we can use your experience to help you correct what you might have done wrong. Maybe someone else will read of your experience and save themselves some grief. Before you answer I am going to guess that you had turf-type tall fescue sod installed. I'm also going to guess that you mowed it down to 2 inches or lower and maybe mowed every other week. I'm also going to guess that you either did not water at all or that you watered it from 3 to 7 times per week in the summer. And as a wild guess I'm going to say you live in the transition zone where cool season grass and warm season grass can sometimes coexist.
