Making my lawn GREEN?

Posted by TEC5154 Chicago (My Page) on

I see my neighbors all have TruGreen Chemlawn come out and spray their lawn. I would like to do that but I have a 2 year old baby and a year old puppy and I don't want them coming in contact with all those chemicals. Is there like a mix that I can use to make my yard look like that? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have a pretty big yard.

All of the box stores carry organic fertilizer now.

If you can get to a feed store, you can use cracked grains, alfalfa or soybean meal as fertilizer. Spread them at a rate of 20 lbs per 1000 sq ft.

I use an organic fertilizer called Converted Organics (8-1-4). I've had great results. I only fertilize twice per year and my lawn is very green. I can get it at Home Depot. I would stay away from the synthetic/fake stuff. You get great short term results but your lawn becomes dependent long term and can't live without it, needing 4-5 applications throughout the year.

I have been using Scotts 4 step program. I'm assuming this isn't ideal?

Your Scotts 4 Step program is ideal if you own stock in the Scotts company. Since you have concerns about your child and pet (as you should), an organic approach to feeding your lawn would be the more prudent approach.

Put some ironite on it just before its due to rain for a few days. The rain will keep the kids off the lawn whilst its watered in.
