Halts

In early spring it was a toss-up whether I should put down Halts or take the crabgrass risk and overseed.

I opted for Halts and now am sorry I did. I know I should have put down the stuff that allows seeding. Lawn looks ok from a distance but there are a lot of bare spots that need seeding. It's a fescue lawn so I won't see a lot of spreading.

Is there a way of seeding these spots even though I put down Halts. I thought of sod but I hate the patchy look it gives the lawn.

Thanks for any suggestions.

RE: Halts

This is probably NOT what you are wanting to hear. Since it is already mid-May, your best course of action is to live with what you have until Labor Day. Shortly after Labor Day, be prepared to prep and re-seed any thin areas.

Have you taken soil samples and submitted to a lab for analysis?

Are you mowing and watering correctly?

There are things you can do to keep your lawn in good condition until the end of summer.

You did the right thing i think. Leave the bare spots and just kill the weeds until fall. In august throw down some seed and it will grow without the competition from weeds. By next spring you should be in good shape. Any grass you would have planted in spring would have died in the hot NJ summer anyway.

Thanks for the input.

I sort of figured I was stuck with my decision. Really can't complain though. Lawn looks pretty good. I'll wait until late August to reseed. Soil samples have shown good chemical balance and I subscribe to the water sparingly but deeply school of thought. Biggest successful changes for me were mowing high and fertilizing in Sept, Oct, and Nov/Dec.
