Will landscaper be here tomorrow?

A landscaper is supposedly scheduled to come tomorrow to prepare beds, mulch, and put down sod. I'm wondering if I am going to get a call tomorrow saying they cannot come. It has been raining here daily and it's wet. Tomorrow is suppose to be sunny, the first sunny day all week. So who thinks they are going to show up or give me a call?

The rain we have had could have caused the landscaper to fall behind schedule on a previous job that they need to finish before they start on your property. Or if they have enough people, they may be able to get to your work as scheduled. If it doesn't rain today, and they are on schedule, they should be there tomorrow. It may be that they are limited in what they can get done because of the wet conditions on your site, but I suspect they will show up to get started.

Well, did the landscaper show up today as scheduled?

I wish I had good news. No the landscaper did not show up. When I got home on Wednesday there was a message stating they had planned to be there on Thursday but the sod man did not want to cut the sod due to how wet it was. Was this just a line or do you really think this was the case? We have rescheduled for Tuesday and it looks like the rain will hold off for a few days.

No, not a line. That is a legitimate reason, considering all the wet weather we had here last weekend and early this week. And you guys around the Spartanburg area have had more rain than we had here in Durham. With upcoming temps in the mid 80's this weekend and early next week, and no more rain, they should be there on Tuesday.

Keep us posted here on your progress. Good luck with your zoysia.

Well, did the landscaper show up today to renovate your lawn?

You bet they did. They did a great job, they mulched the beds but we still don't have plants yet just grass. The Zenith Zoysia is beautiful. I am so glad we picked it.

Looks like the Spartanburg area is going to be in the 90's for the next couple of days. Make sure that you THOROUGHLY SOAK the sod a minimum of twice a day every day in the absence of rainfall. To verify this, go around and lift up several pieces of sod and ensure that it is wet under the sod....not moist, but WET. Water like this daily for the next 2-3 weeks until you cannot lift up sod pieces...that will mean that the sod is rooting and you are on your way.

Thanks so much for the info. My husband and I are watering like crazy. We are going out of town this weekend and already have someone to take care of the yard. I'm also trying to prepare hubby on what the water bill is going to look like, I guess the sewer bill will be just as bad. It's amazing the difference the house looks once you have a nice yard. I love it!!!

How will you be cutting? Zoysia is a real bear to cut. Very tough blade structure. Watch for thatch.

Thank goodness for a self-propelled lawnmower. It's been 2 weeks since grass has been put down. There are a few brown spots in yard but overall it looks great and it's growing like crazy. When is it time to mow the first time? Also from what I have been reading it says to mow between 1 - 1 1/2", isn't this too low? The grass is thick.

There are 2 important rules for mowing:

1. Mow with a sharp mower blade. If it is not sharp, take it to a lawn mower repair shop and have them sharpen and balance your mower blade.

2. Do not remove more than one-third of the leaf blade in a single cutting. Go out to where the grass is the tallest and measure the height of the grass with a ruler or a tape measure. From that measurement, remove only one-third (or less) of that amount. For example, if the grass is 4 inches tall right now, remove only 1 inch, so set your mower at 3" height of cut. Then come back in a few days and mow again at 2" height of cut. Keep your zoysia at 2" height of cut.

One last thing...do NOT over fertilize your zoysia.
