| Can someone tell me if a Pennington Deep Shade (mostly thin blade fescues) mix will survive in part to full sun? I have some left over from my shady front yard and want to use it in back where I get significantly more sun (3-4 hours direct sun per day).
My understanding is that grass seed will thrive in sun no matter what the variety, but only some varieties tolerate shade. Or is this incorrect? Thanks! |

| 3-4 hours of sun a day isn't really a lot. Most grasses would probably struggle a bit in that amount of sun. Fine fescues should do just fine in 3-4 hours of sun. About the only other widely available cool season grass that you could use in that area is tall fescue. |

| Yes, fine fescue will grow in full sun in the right climate. The NTEP trials in Raleigh are conducted in full sun, and there's fine fescue sod growing there. If this makes you feel better, some road grass here on I-40 is fine fescue in full sun. No irrigation and probably mowing once per month with a dull blade from the NCDOT tractor mowers... |

| I should adjust my estimate of the sun I get in the back -- it is more along the lines of 6 hours a day (12PM-6PM) for 75% of the yard, with the remaining quarter getting 3-4 hours. This mix is supposed to grow in as little as 2 hours of direct sun. I get more than that even in the shady front yard but wasn't sure how it would react to 4-6 hours of sun. |
