| HI group I have an issue with my lawn, pretty much all of it died off last year when we had such a hot dry summer. This spring with it being so wet we have gotten a lot of growth but pretty much most of it is weeds and a smidgen of grass mixed in with it. I would like to kill of the weeds and get some grass growing, but we have to keep it cheap since we are renting and are looking at moving in the near future. But I would hate to live with this and would like to leave the place as nice as we can. We have thistles in our yard, and they like to take over quite a bit, we also have some big leaved plants that I wouldnt say was a good plant to have, looks almost like elephant ears. When you bust it up it has milk type stuff that comes out of the cut. Those are the main issues we have and of course dandy lions, would be nice to get rid of those too. Our soil type is pretty much clay, and rock so would have to get a grass that grows well in that type of soil. Hope to hear from the group soon, God bless.

Hi Francine, Now that you know that grass dies when it gets hot and dry, would you be willing to water it in August when it gets hot and dry again? Water is key to grass survival, but a lot of people refuse to water. If that is the case, then get used to weeds. There are some grasses which are adapted to getting watered only a few times per year but those are not commonly used in lawns. If you are willing to water we can help you with a program there. If not, we can help you find some different grasses, too.

My problem is we have a cistern and so we pay through the nose to have that cistern filled. So no we are not really willing to pay 100 dollars on a water bill for the lawn, when we are having a hard time keeping ahead of the bills as it is. If you could tell me of some hardy grasses that can handle hot seasons that would be best. But also a good way to get rid of these weeds like the thistles. Again if it is expensive than we will just deal with the weeds and chopping them down when they get too big.

A thistle can be many different plants. Does it grow tall or run across the ground? If you have water issues then the prairie grasses are going to work better for you. There are sodded varieties of buffalo grass that work well. Seeded varieties of buffalo grass always look like the side of a road - sparse and weedy. There are some other grasses, which I really need to make note of. bpgreen is the guy with the info on those.

It grows tall, and gets pretty big around with a thick stock.

Those should be controlled easily by mowing. They probably have a tap root which would make them quick work for the Weed-Hound tool. The Weed-Hound is a tool you can use to pluck weeds out by the root while standing up. Pretty cool design. The only complaints I've seen are from people who didn't read how to use them.
