| Due to thin grass, I overseeded right before winter started using the "dormant / winter seeding" method. Unfortunately it kind of backfired on me because we had a record hot spell in the middle of March, and at least some of the grass seed germinated then. We live in Northern Wisconsin, and grass normally germinates around now, the middle of May, so this was basically 2 months early.
So now I have some grass seedlings (fine fescue) about 1-2 inches tall, with the possibility that some more may be germinating now (I don't really know if more will or not). My existing lawn grass is getting very high, > 6" in spots and forming seed heads, not to mention the weeds getting tall. Even though things look poor, I'm more concerned about the health of the lawn rather than how it looks. I'm wondering when I should mow. I would have normally mowed by now to not allow the grass to get this tall, but I have been avoiding it because I don't want to damage the seedlings. But I also don't want the weeds to get out of control, or the seedlings to get shaded too much from the tall grass. How do I know when to mow? Thanks. |

| You need to mow. Seedlings at 1-2 inches are pretty tough, even though they don't look it. I would cut the grass to about 4 inches ASAP, then in a few days, bring it down to 2.5-3 inches. |
