cut grass to short is it ruined for good?

As advised by my mum we cut our back lawn shorter as she said it was too long for a lawn, I think my hubby cut it too short now it has the military hair cut look and I am wondering if we have ruined it for good? Usually he left it longer which in the end I wish we had of done. Now it looks dry and I can see dry grass and soil. We live in southern ontario. I also posted a questions about dethatching which is some of the reason for cutting shorter although we are not sure we are doing that now.

It was a new sod lawn last year and now it looks like a lot of dry grass and I fear it's ruined and our money wasted. So far no weeds yet which it was cover in before the new sod. Help have we ruined the lawn for good or once it grows will it come back if we don't cut it short? This is the first time ever cutting it this short.

Thanks for your suggestions and help!

You should not remove more than 1/3 of the height of grass at a time to reduce stress and leave enough blade for the turf to efficiently photosynthisize (not sure that is a word). But that's water under the bridge. Start watering the grass a couple times a day and it should recover within a week. You need to find another mum for lawn advice--(attempt at humor)
What type of turf grass did you sod?

LOL, I trust my mum but I think she may have been wrong here not sure. Really water now? my neighbours say it's too early to water grass yet but I have to say I am leaning towards watering. My mum lol, yes more of her advice haha, said it's not a water problem perhaps but a thatch problem, to cut it shorter and rake it. My hubby believed her to cut it shorter so did however dethatching hasn't happened.
I just took photos of our lawn but not sure if I can pos them here going to see. Can't figure out how to add a photos darnit, thanks !
Type of sod no idea it was a lawn company that came int as our whole yard got new soil and sod and posts of a fence to be put up. I sure looks like the grass is dying to me and we had not had much rain and not as much snow this winter and got very hot for a couple weeks in March and this weekend is going to be a scortcher. This is unusal for this time of year!

Thanks for your response and any others that want to give advice I am all for it.

Well, you might as well satisfy your thatch concerns. Take a knife and cut straight down on four sides of a two inch square and take the square plug up as intact as possible. Google "pictures/photgraphs of thatch" and compare the profile "side view" of your plug to the pictures of plugs with thatch. The rule of thumb is "more" than 1/2" of thach. Do remember--cut grass blades (seeing as you just cut the heck out of your lawn) are not actually considered thatch as they readily decompose. Put the plug back in the hole when you are done. Please post what your results are.

HI there,
I am going to try watering first. Is it really bad to water in the evening. I have read a lot about this and is says early morning however this is not possible for me and I know during the day is not recommended and I can't do this either. Last summer we did it in the evening but now I read it can promote desease and when we go away and have a neighbour look after our lawn evening is the only time he can do it too. Help!

There are university turf programs that say all the talk about evening and night watering causeing disease is poppycock. They report that there is no increase in disease when watering is done in the evening or night.

Yippee to that university study...we've watered in the evening for years. Tried the morning watering and our lawn hated it. After such a short cut on really long grass, those clippings should be raked off so you can do a nice, deep watering. There's no calendar date for watering in my book...rake off the clippings and water- it'll bounce back.

if you are watering once or maybe twice a week, there should be nothing wrong with watering at night...if you are someone who waters every/ever other day, watering at night may cause problems.
