| Hello, I have this type of grass/weed growing in my lawn that has spread to mostly the whole thing. It looks like crabgrass but I'm not sure it it is. Any help is appreciated thanks.

| No, it is not crabgrass, but does look like some well fed Kentucky 31 tall fescue. |

| you are talking about the plants with the large blades correct? |
Response to RE: weed/grass identification w/ pics
| | |
| that is correct. Definitely NOT crabgrass. |

| So it is possibly kentucky 31 tall fescue? |

| I agree it looks a bit like K-31, but at the same time it doesn't. That color is blue green, which isn't typical of K-31. Perhaps it is just a photographic artifact. Also it looks like it has a prominent central vein, as the blades have a distinct fold to them, which isn't typical of tall fescue. Definitely not crabgrass, which is too bad, that's not so hard to deal with. Here's a grassy weed id key that might help. http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/TOOLS/TURF/PESTS/grasskey.html |

| After looking at the close up pics, I see the folded leaf blades, making it less likely to be tall fescue. I don't think it is a bluegrass either. Perhaps it could be orchardgrass. Do a google search for orchardgrass and see if you can find pictures and information that resemble your weed issue. |

| It looks similar to orchard grass, definitely grows a lot faster then the rest of the grass. I'm also assuming whether it's orchard grass or k-31 there is no way to kill it without killing the rest of the grass. |

| My final answer is Orchardgrass. You probably had some contaminated grass seed. If I am not mistaken, Orchardgrass can only be controlled with Roundup in cool-season turf. But keep checking, I could easily be wrong with my weed identification. |

| Alright, either way I'll have to kill it with roundup or let it be. Another question, is it possible to overseed a existing lawn with kbg without completely killing the whole lawn and get decent results? |

This has to be totally killed or it will start to spread again. I used round up last fall but I missed a couple of patches. It is back! If you are going to renovate wait until late summer early fall! Good luck! |
