| Hi there,
We live in Southern Ontario Canada In the summer of 2011 we had our backyard redone new soil, old grass out and new sod put down.We also put up a fence. This spring we are noticing we have what we thought was dead grass which were later were told by my mum that it's thatch. She suggested cutting it short and getting a rake and dethatching it. We have cut it short but have yet to dethatch. Questions:
I have heard about getting a machine to do it but also it can power rake it or totally dethatch, which is better. I have also read may be irrigation where you poke holes and let water in better. But it's not time to water I wouldn't think? My husband thought it was just dead grass but my mum said no. I am worried we will ruin our lawn. I need advice before my husband goes ahead with this. We don't know anything about lawn care. We get snow and frost so i am guessing we will get thatch every year.

| It is very unlikely that you have a thatch problem this soon after a new lawn intallation. If you can post some pictures you may get an answer that may save you a lot of time and money. BTW a machine that dethatches is called a power rake--same thing. The process of making holes in the lawn is aeration and the machine is called an aerator. Plug aeration is the most recommended type. |

| Oh, and with sod, you should be watering it well and regularly. By cutting it short, you are just making the turf use valuable resources to grow the blades back rather than growing a needed root network. Longer blades equals deeper roots. |
