 o
what is the minimum to run a sprinkler system?

my new house came with a sprinkler system. I think I am zone 4? I'm in Andover, which is north of Boston, almost to the New Hampshire border.

I have not even figured out how to turn the sprinkler system on. The last owner left the name of the service guy who opened up the lines for her and shut it down for the winter.

I've never had a sprinkler system, I mow myself, and I frankly liked that my lawn went dormant so I didn't have to mow for at least all of August!!

I'm thinking of calling the guy about turning it on, just so I know how/if it works.

SO, I'm wondering what is the minimum to run it to be worthwhile to the lawn? I don't want to do it so seldom it's just a waste of water and it goes dormant anyway.

The answer to this will be different for you and me and even for your next door neighbor. It depends on your grass type, mowing height, soil structure, humidity, sunlight, shade, wind, and the ability of your sprinkler(s) to water evenly.

As a starting point I would have him set it on once per week to water for 30 minutes. That amount would not allow my grass to survive but yours might make it depending on all those factors. I water for 3-5 hours per week, all at one time.

The rule of thumb is "about an inch per week". How long your sprinkler system takes to do that is impossible to predict without measuring. The easiest way to do that is to take some empty tuna cans and place them around the yard. Turn the sprinklers on and see how long it takes to fill them.

In most conditions, a once a week watering for that amount of time will keep the lawn looking nice.
