Since the grass is so dead, I'm going to say it was St Augustine. Most other grasses will survive some drought, but St Aug goes completely dead once everything dries out.

The weed could be a number of things. If you could zoom in that would help (me, at least). It is a broadleaf weed and should be treatable with something like weed b gone spray.

You live in the area where you can get away with growing either northern grasses or southern grasses. Check your neighbors to see if you see a predominant lawn grass. If you see one that seems to do well all around you, find out what it is and come back with that info.

What do you want from your lawn? Do you want to play on it or just look at it? Do you have pets or children? Do you want to have the yard of the month type of effect? Are you willing to water it every week in the summer? Have a preference for chemicals or organic fertilizers? Do you want one type of grass or is 'just green' fine? How much time, money, and effort do you want to put into it?

The predominant grass in the area and on both neighbors beside me is centipede. Kids are grown and no pets. I have no preference to fertilizers. I don't need the lawn of the month but would like a healthy weed free yard. I don't mind watering and there is an irrigation system but it hasn't been used since the house was built six years ago according to the previous owner. Unfortunately I cut the grass two days ago and can't get a good picture for a couple of weeks. I zoomed in on the one attached and hope this helps. Searching the internet the weed looks like wild (Carolina) geranium or cranesbill. Thanks for your help.
