I planted Floratine sod 2 weeks ago and am noticing it is semi green with patches of brown. seems the brown parts are loose from the install. I have the following questions.

1. when should i cut it?
2. how should i cut it?
3. when should i put fertilizer?
4. what kind of fertilizer?

I'm certainly no expert and new to this stuff. And I'm assuming you mean Floratam St. Augustine? I also laid new Floratam sod about a four weeks ago and it is mostly doing very well.

Due to heavy rains here in San Antonio, I'm also experiencing brown spots in certain areas likely due to fungus problems. I was advised to put organic corn meal on the yard as a antifungal.

When to cut? I cut mine after two full weeks, but I did check to make sure the sod patches were starting to take root. (Doesn't come straight up if you lift it)

How to cut? If you really have Floratam St. Augustine cut it tall, at your mowers highest mower setting. (At least 3 inches) and cut it every week for at least the first few months.

Now the fertilizer, I'm still questionable on....So take with a grain of salt. But I will be using Organic Fertilizer I got from the organic garden center. Usually new sod comes pre-fertilized and you are advised not to fertilize with chemical fertilizer for at least six weeks. I've been told that with organic fertiler you can do it sooner because it won't burn your roots. But definitely wait the six weeks if you plan on using chemical fertilizer.

Hope that helps.

Disease in new sod is not uncommon. I advised BlueWrapper to use ordinary (not organic) corn meal. It happens to be an organic treatment but if you spent your time looking for organic corn in this day of genetically modified corn, you'd never get anything done. Ordinary corn meal will attract a fungus that kills other fungi, like the one turning your lawn brown. The application rate is 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet. I would repeat the app in 3-4 weeks to be sure. It takes 3 weeks to see any improvement anyway. Apply to the entire lawn because you cannot know where it is going to pop up next.

Yes, ordinary corn meal is like the stuff you get at the grocery store. If you want to save a lot of money, get it in 50-pound bags from a feed store. Call first. Be sure you are talking about ordinary corn meal and not corn gluten meal. Feed store corn is feed (not food) grade. It is buggy so I would not try using it to cook with. The easiest way to apply is by hand flinging it like chicken feed. Get enough for your lawn and apply as evenly as you can until it's all gone.

Mow St Aug at your mower's highest setting. When it gets up to 5 inches high, you can mow it back to 4. There is never any reason to lower your mower deck for St Augustine.

If you are going to use chemical fertilizer, you can wait the 6 weeks. Next year you can fertilize on Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving. If you are going to use organic fertilizer, you can apply any day, or every day, of the year. You can't hurt the grass or soil by using too much. You can; however, create a stink in the neighborhood if you use too much. Start with 10-20 pounds per 1,000 square feet at first and work your way up. How much is too much? Well at 80 pounds per 1,000 you will begin to smother the grass under the fertilizer. And the stink will last for 6 weeks. Start small and the aroma will not be as bad and will go away faster.
