Pennington Seed Starter Mats

Hi,

A few months ago I seeded a small area with Pennington dense shade mix. Since I had bird feeders, I also opted to lay down Pennington seed starter mats to give the seed more protection from the birds. The grass has come in (~4" high), but is patchy in many areas, and I need to add additional seed.

The seed starter mats said that they would break down over time. They don't appear to be breaking down for me, though. When I go to pull them up by hand, they start to take the grass with them. Has anyone used these mats before and know the secret to getting them off the lawn?

I am still watering my lawn 3x/day...should I stop watering for a few days and let the mats really dry out? Would that make it easier for them to be pulled out?

Thanks in advance!

RE: Pennington Seed Starter Mats

I would just leave them and let them decompose, pulling them up will likely uproot a lot of your new grass. I wouldn't seed any more either, it's too late in the season. Wait till late summer. FYI birds really aren't a problem with grass seed, and if you have feeders they are going to ignore grass seed over the feeders. If your new grass is still 4" high it really needs to be cut.
