Too much fertilizer on Bermuda -- HELP!!!

Posted by daveatl GA (My Page) on

Put down 8 times the proper amount of 34-0-0 on my Bermuda. This past Friday. Used 25+ lbs. on 1200 sq. ft. Lots of granules left on the lawn in front of my home.

What should I do? Flood my lawn? Cut the lawn [in hopes of getting up granules]? Use Gypsum to neutralize? Or Vacuum the granules up with my Wet/Dry Vac.? Should I do all the above a combination of each???

Long story short my seeder wasn't calibrated correctly.

TEXAS WEED OR ANYONE WITH THE KNOWLEDGE -- IF YOUR READING THIS PLEASE HELP.

Mow it with a bag attachment?
You could use a lawn blower to get it off your lawn and then water the heck out of it.

Since you did it on Friday, the only thing you can do now is to flood your lawn and try to leach the nitrogen through the soil. Here we are 4+ days later, and how does it look?

Well I know I will get a lot of eyebrows raised with my answer.

Apply water and some more water. Bermuda is a nitrogen hog. The Bermuda might get burned temporary, but it will recover.

Likely all you did is make the Bermuda very angry at you, and will take its revenge in explosive growth once it gets over the shock and awe.

You might want to get your mower blade sharpened....again.

Stand by to mow 3-4 times per week for the next few weeks. Then it will be gone.

Thanks for all the advice thus far -- I've been watering the hell out of the lawn daily [2hrs] and I'm going to cut the lawn tonight.

There is actually alot of excess spots with layered granules and I'm may just go out with the wet/dry vac and get up what I can [post-mow].

It's actually, looking greener on top but underneath all the greenery there is nothing but brown [which is scaring the heck out of me].

Originally, I was going to mow, dry vac the excess, then use gypsum, and water water water. Now, I'm thinking that I may just mow, dry vac the excess and flood, flood, flood. Thoughts?

Relax that is normal. How many days ago did you do this? If it has been more than 3 or 4 days since it was first watered in and do not have burned grass, you are are going to be fine and very busy mowing for a few weeks.

RE: Too much fertilizer on Bermuda -- HELP!!!

I overfertilized 5 days ago [on Friday].

I'm getting my terms confused I thought that brown grass underneath the green is considered 'burned' grass.

Also, in the one spot I did vacuum up it turned yellowish brown. is this a burn spot?

I vaccumed that spot as testing for the rest.

I have yet to cut because, I was afraid if I do it'll all look brown -- which leads me to a few questions:

When and how often do I cut?? and how low?

How much longer do I continue the flooding [1hr+ daily watering] or when can I go back to watering 1 inch weekly? When all the granules disappear? Another week? two?

Lastly, is 1hr daily sufficient, I've read to water 1 hr every 8hrs? Is this true.
Thanks in advance.

You are well past the point of frequent watering. The fertilizer probably had some fast acting (easily dissolved) and slow acting granules. The point of the excess water was to dissolve the excess fast acting stuff and get it away from the roots. You did that 3 days ago.

So even if there are still a number of visible granules left, I'm fine???

Are you saying that the only granules left are 'slow acting?'

Thanks.

Dave, it's been nearly a week. Relax. If the lawn was going to burn it would have happened by now. The brown underneath is perfectly normal. You can scalp any healthy Bermuda lawn and it will look brown. There are always going to be brown sheaths around the lower parts of the grass. Just be sure and mow often and you should see nothing but green. Lots of green because you have lots of nitrogen.

David relax, the crisis is over. What is left is poly coated slow release urea.

RE: Too much fertilizer on Bermuda -- HELP!!!

***UPDATE*** My lawn is looking the best it has in years, extremely 'mean and green.' I see that I am going to have to cut it every 3-4 days [not a problem].

Ironically, the one spot that had a small amount of burnage was the one where I tried to get the fertilizer up.

I want to close this thread out by saying Thank you one and all for you wisdom, experience and above all quick reponses.

To daveatl: For continued management of your bermudagrass lawn, I would suggest you google "bermuda bible" and follow the annual recommendations listed there. Good luck.
