Watering 'Young'Grass

We planted new grass from seed last October. It was able to grow a little before the winter set in and is still very thin this Spring.

We've gotten mixed advice as to how often we should water it. One person recommended 1-2 times a day, while others have recommended infrequent watering (once a week) to get a stronger root base.

Does it make sense to water daily for a couple of weeks to get it to come in, and then slowly wean down to 1 to 2 times a week? It's in a very sunny spot so it dries out quickly.

Any advice would be appreciated!

If it is established (which it is), water infrequently but deeply. Otherwise you will promote shallow rooting and crabgrass.

This means about 1" of water, once a week, if you don't get any soaking rains. Otherwise, let mother nature handle it.

If it is thin, I suspect something else besides water caused it.

A soil test is your best bet here. Find out your PH and macronutrient levels, then adjust your program in the fall accordingly. Until you do that, you are shooting in the dark.

I seeded TTTF/KBG last October (10/28) here in Durham, NC; watered until mid November, and I haven't applied water since November. It has been rainfall only, and the lawn looks great. I will not water again until I see wilt.

If you water 1-2 times per day you will get a strong base of weeds. They love the continual moisture.
