Overseed lawn by not cutting?

A friend of mine is telling me that he never over seeds his lawn because once a year, he allows the grass to go to seed and then cuts.

I'm wondering if that's even possible because he cuts around a week after he sees seed heads form. I told him he'd have to wait longer then that ... possibly would need to wait till the grass starts to brown. He said he's been doing it for years and never had to purchase grass seed.

Does anyone know if what he's doing actually works or am I right in that he would need to wait till the grass w/seed starts to brown?

Thanks!!

It would only work if you let the grass grow into the summer without a mow. Seeds on turfgrass need to mature and harden for a long time. Unfortunately poa annua is probably the only grasses in his lawn that produces seeds that will germinate.

I think poa annua would seed that quickly...

TTTF won't set seed until it's 2+ ft tall!
