| I believe this is ground ivy aka "creeping charly" and possibly another broad based leaf weed. Can someone please confirm that is in fact ground ivy? I have about an 1000 sq ft layer of this stuff and I am start to feel overwelmed. i have spent the last week or so hand pulling and spot spraying with very little results. Other parts of my lawn are doing well. I dont really know what happened.

It sure looks like it, but I wish your pics were closer. There are plenty of pics of it on the internet, I'm sure you could match it up if it is. If you can, buy Weed B Gone CCO (Chickweed, Clover, Oxalis) killer. I get it at Home Depot. I would use that in a tank sprayer. It might take a few apps, but I am pretty sure that will take care of it. If you want to be really aggressive, then tank mix the CCO and Weed B Gone Max and hit it with that.

Sprinkle it with baking soda, then a little vinegar. Oh and don't forget the all important corn gluten. If the sun is hot enough you might get corn bread. No... just joking. That's my cheap shot at the organic crowd. What tiemco just posted above is what I would use. I believe he is "right on" with that answer.

If you are going to mock organic lawn care, at least get the treatment right. Borax is what is use on creeping charlie. If you are going to use herbicides to control this weed, the most effective time is in fall when it is storing energy. In spring or summer, it is likely going to take multiple applications. A good strategy this time of year is 2 applications 2 weeks apart. Then, follow up with some hand weeding to take out the stragglers. You still may end up spot spraying to control it all summer.

The spots were it is heaviest I will ultimately have to reseed. How do I know I am safe to reseed without promoting more of this nasty weed?

If you are going to reseed a patch, take a couple minutes and dig the soil up at least 6 inches down. This weed forms rhizomes underground that let is regrow even when the top is killed back. Sift through the soil and make sure none of those are left.

Does that mean my handweeding is useless? I have been spot spraying and hand pulling. I didn't realize I need to use the weed by gone specific to this stuff. Should I wait a while before spraying again?

"Does that mean my handweeding is useless?" Not useless, but probably not enough unless you are getting the whole root. The new topgrowth is sending back energy to the roots, so getting rid of it will slow the weed down. You need to kill or remove the rhizomes for complete control though.
