Lawn going to seed @ 3' cut?

| I live in West Michigan and use the Scott's 4 step annual program. We've gotten plenty of rain in the past 2 mos so haven't needed to water.
I mulch cut with frequently sharpened blades and i'm finding with a cut height of 3" the grass is going to seed, this is *not* POA annua as it's the entire lawn (.75 acre)and is not lighter in color. My neighbor says this behavior is normal all season long, although I don't remember it happening last year. Turf is pretty strong, had no weeds so far except a dozen or so dandelion plants which I killed.
Just looks really ugly :( |

| I saw that when I lived in the Texas Panhandle a few years ago. It is normal...and ugly. Look the other way for a few weeks and it should go away. |

| does it indicate a problem or is it good? i don't recall it happening in previous years when i wasn't so anal about the lawn |

This happens. Grass has to get much longer for the seeds to germinate. Just keep cutting and they will disappear. Sometimes you have to cut lower in the spring. |

| This is entirely normal--some years more than others. Just keep up with the mowing. The seedheads take energy to create and mature. The lawn is a little better off when they get cut off. |

| I personally cut at 3" right now. I don't mind the seedheads that are lower than the cut. In another 2 weeks, they will be all gone. |

| when will the grass start "filling in" the small areas that are bare? |

Good question. The longer the grass the better the root system. So, 3 inches will send tillers to the bare spots. The problem with letting grass grow too tall is it will sometimes lie down and make bare spots. If you have compacted soil that can cause the rhizomes not to seek out. With my area Maryland and growing tall type grass (Black Beauty) 3 inches looks good and grows well. When cutting always change direction from the previous pattern. |

| Grass has been setting seed in spring for several million years. It is perfectly normal. Frequent mowing will help it look better, but it will stop on its own as the temps rise. |

| I aerated last fall and applied starter fertilizer, just not happy with how it looks overall with the seedheads EVERYWHERE... makes me feel like i'm doing everything wrong when I look at it. It grows plenty fast though, I have to mow it every 2-3 days and still get clumps :/ |
