My lawn

Hi guys,

I've been reading for a while now and decided that I should register and say hello. My name is Crawford and my wife and I bought our first house about 40 minutes outside of Atlanta, Georgia about 4 months ago.

I always knew that the lawn bug would get me, and now I find myself obsessing about its look and health (one and the same really).

Our house is new construction and I believe my sod may have been laid in late November of 2012. From what I can tell, the yard is a Bermuda hybrid and was about 30% weeds when I moved in. I'm guessing this was due to when it was laid or maybe poor soil quality underneath, but the weeds were almost all growing up through the seams. It also seems that my yard is mostly clay under the grass, or at least looks that way from the plugs I took when I aerated it. I only aerated lightly as I didn't know if it would hurt the grass, but it was so hard I figured it needed it.

Ill try and post pictures if I can figure that out, but anyways, nice to meet everyone.

I found a picture of the lawn when I moved in. This was taken in late March I believe

And here is an up to date photo that I took last weekend. It's finally what I would consider "presentable" but far from where I want it.

For the lawn experts out there, I have a few questions.

My lawn is thick (for a new lawn I think), but I want it to be much thicker. I bought a McLane Reel mower as well as a regular rotary lawn mower. I've been cutting it at about 3-4" (guestimate) so it can thicken up. Is this ideal? I'd like to keep it at around 3/4" eventually, but I think cutting it so short may slow it's development as a new lawn. Am I wrong?

My yard is way too uneven to currently trim it short, which brings me to my next question. Should I wait to level my lawn with sand until next year? My thoughts here are that I should give the lawn a full year of growth before I stress it by covering parts in sand?

Can anyone in Georgia give me some tips on water? I've been trying to give it 1" a week in 2, 1/2" watering sessions (Monday and Thursday) and I installed a weather sensor that is adjusting this schedule based on rainfall. Am I watering enough? When my irrigation system comes on, it does so in a 1:2 on/off ratio to try and prevent as much runoff as possible. It basically comes on for 10 minutes and then turns off for 20, 4 times in a row.
