I am going to go with, dead. Planting late like that the roots never got going to get deep enough to survive the winter. The south side must have gotten just enough sun to warm the ground to get it though winter.

Is that a cedar/juniper tree? Before I cast any aspersions, who pruned it like that? And would you like to get rid of it and replace it with a pretty specimen?

Did you plant the TifGrand because it was supposed to be good in the shade under trees?

Actually I kind of like the gnarly old cedar tree but I like it better with the tattered lawn rather than lush greed sod.

Having you sod fail the way it did create a nice effect in you lawn or whatever that is as it matches the style of the tree.
