Hi all, just an informational only question regarding Bermuda sod root depth. What is the best root length for an established, healthy, Bermuda lawn? For example, I had to dig up some of my sod (landscaping/flower bed project)and was looking at my roots. I noticed that under the grass was about 2 inches of attached soil with the roots sticking out at various lengths through this 2 inch layer (I understand I probably cut the roots). However, it made me think about what the average root length should be for an established, healthy, Bermuda lawn. Thanks!

It depends on the type of soil you have, how long has your bermuda been planted, and what type of management program have you used to grow and develop your bermuda (regular soil testing, mowing height, watering schedule, fertilizer, herbicides, etc.). For me, I am less concerned about root depth and focus more on root mass. However, to answer your question with a general answer, I would think if you can maintain bermuda roots at a 4" - 6" depth, you are doing ok. But again, there are variables, such as the ones listed above, which greatly influence the rooting depth of turfgrasses. To me, the most positive influential factors of rooting depth are proper watering and adequate fertility. The most negative influential factor of rooting depth is the use of pre-emerge herbicides.

It's amazing, sod farms get what, 4 cuttings in and average year? And the stuff just grows back. I can attest to the negatives of pre-m. I was overdoing it a few seasons ago and am struggling to get back my really healthy turf.
