"Weed" sprouting from tree root

I had these weird "weeds" sprouting up in my yard so I went to go dig them up. It turns out, they are connected to some kind of tree root running under our lawn. If it matters, the trees we have in that area are sweet gum trees.

Does anyone know how to get rid of plants that are sprouting from tree roots? I cut them off as close to the root as I could, but they grew back...should I be cutting out sections of the root?

Can you advise the community of your USDA planting zone or take a pic of the "weed" in question? Pics are really helpful. My neighbor also has something sprouting under her grass and it would be interesting to see if it's the same thing...
