Why is my lawn looking brown?

Natalou

We have recently started a whole new project on my backyard. We removed all the old grass and sodded it all with bluegrass sod (my boyfriend, my sister and I did it all!!). It looked pretty for a month, thriving as ever with a beautiful green!

Here's what we did, and I'd appreciate if you can help me figure out the reason why it has become patchy and sad to help it again!

1. We watered the sod everyday twice a day for 15 minutes, unless we receive good rain, for about a month.

1. We fertilized it using Vigoro fertilizer about 10 days after sodding.

2. We mowed it for the first time about 4 weeks after sodding. I think we mowed it too low...

3. After mowing, we saw some yellow patches. I know the lawn had grown very long before so we thought that the lower part of it was probably growing into roots, so I was hoping it corrects itself.

4. After a second mow, (which was a week after the first mow), the lawn is looking pretty sad with brown spots. It also looks thin , unlike the nice green carpet of two weeks ago!

I will post chronological pictures and closeups in a subsequent post...

I hope you have any insights as to what went wrong!!

PS: We do not have any dogs...
