What problems should be tackled first?

Hi,

New home owner here -- I have a large yard with what seems to be every problem a lawn can have. I have moles, ants, different types of grass, bare spots, weeds and a yard that gets both sun and heavy shade.

So the big question what's first?

I've started by clearing debris throughout the yard and popping poison pellets to handle the moles but past that I'm not sure where to begin reviving the lawn.

Thanks for the help!

There is really no first. The ants aren't really an issue. Ants aren't a huge deal unless you have huge mounds like in Texas. Moles, sounds like you are dealing with them. Bare spots, can't really seed now, summer is right around the corner, best to wait till Sept. 1 to put seed down. Weeds need to be killed now, it's the perfect time. Weed B Gone max should take care of most broadleaf weeds. Use a hose end sprayer if they are everywhere, a tank sprayer if they aren't too bad. I would recommend you get a professional soil test done. You can't have a nice lawn with lousy soil. www.loganlabs.com, $20 basic soil test.

Figure out which is the grass and which is the weeds. Keep an eye on the grass.

Start watering deeply but not very often. Deeply means an inch at a time. Not very often means no more than every 7-10 days this time of year in NJ. If it gets hotter then watch the grass to see if it wilts. IF/when it wilts, water again.

Mow high for now. You probably don't have the grass that should be mowed low.

Fertilize quickly with something if you have not already. If you want to use organic fertilizer, then there is no hurry. You can do that any day. But if you want to use chemical fertilizer, do it now and you might even cut back a little on the dose. The salty chemicals can put more stress on the grass plants.

If you are going to spray for weeds, spot spray. Don't drench the soil. All you have to do is moisten the leaves.
