How do you install a compression coupling?

I am repairing a line leak in my irrigation system and have to install a compression coupling in the middle of the line. My question is do I use some kind of lubricant on the compression o-ring and how tight do I make it? White grease, silicone lubricant?

BTW, don't know if it matters but this is a 2" main irrigation line that is always under pressure.

If it is pvc why not glue it.
If it is steel I would use a union.
If you cannot do any of the above I can see using a compression coupling.
You should be able to feel when it is tight enough.
No lubricant is necessary.
