large yellow patches in lawn

We have some large yellow patches of lawn that have crept up seemingly all of a sudden. This is a tall fescue. We last fertilized in November with a weed & feed (our extension office says fertilizing once a year at Thanksgiving is best). We haven't applied anything to the lawn since then. We have watered once during a recent heat wave but otherwise have seemed to be getting enough rain lately. The photo shows the back, where the discoloration seems more patchy. It seems more gradual in the front and side, with the yellowing being more dispersed evenly throughout the grass. Any ideas about what this might be? Thanks!

It's most likely brown patch, a fungal disease that's very common on TTTF lawns in hot and humid conditions.

I would like to tune up what your extension service agent told you.

IF YOU ARE ONLY GOING TO FERTILIZE ONCE PER YEAR, then Thanksgiving is the time. You will probably be happier fertilizing 3x per year as follows: once on Memorial Day, once on Labor Day, and once on Thanksgiving.

In addition if you are going to fertilize, use a fertilizer. If you want to kill weeds, use a separate herbicide product for that. Preferably use a liquid that allows you to spot spray individual weeds. But don't use a weed n feed product. The results from those products are rarely what you were expecting them to be.
