Need Help: Weeds Everywhere

I just closed on a new home and the law, while green is filled with weeds. Lots of clover, but other weeds as well. Most weed and fees I look at seems to say that they should be applied in spring. Its July now, is there any product that I can apply? Or should I just wait and do an application in the fall? This is in eastern PA. Thanks.

I wouldn't recommend a weed and feed. It's also pretty risky to apply an herbicide at this time of year.

There are other posts going on at this time that ask just about the same thing.

This is the wrong time of the year for using a weed and feed product. Also, and unfortunately, it is too hot for using post-emerge herbicides on cool season grasses. The wise move is to just live with what you have at the present time and wait until cooler weather arrives in about 60-75 days.

However, what you could do in the meantime is collect soil samples from your lawn and submit them to a soil lab for testing to see what nutrients are needed or are in excess in your soil. That way, you'll be ready to make adjustments when cooler weather arrives. The presence of clover is a pretty good indication that your soil is deficient in nitrogen.

Agree. Take the summer off. When the summer heat breaks and the evening temps drop back into the low 70s (or 60s), then you can implement your plan.

Weed and feed products are asked about all the time. The problem with them is the weed killer works best when the weeds are well fertilized. Unfortunately the fertilizer takes a few days to take effect and the weed killer is going away. A better approach is to fertilize (when the weather is cool enough) and two weeks later, come back and spot spray individual weeds with something like Weed-b-Gone.

Is there any recommended place to submit your soil samples for testing?
