can i plant a temporary grass cover end of june

dug out a pachysandra bed. it fronted some junipers next to house. I now have a vacant dirt bed ripe for weeds. it's about 20 long by 5 ft deep. is there something I can plant there til sept when I can start grass. if I put down preen now, how long is it in the soil?

and wish you hadn't? No!

Just mow it and level it and wait until mid August. Then Round Up and seed.

Any turf grass seed you put down now would have to be bermuda. In zone 6, depending on where you live, even that might not work. Fescue and Kentucky bluegrass are sure to die in the summer heat leaving you with crabgrass.

I would be inclined to put a few inches of mulch in there until late August when the summer heat starts to break. Then pull the mulch out and seed the grass. The mulch will do more for your soil than anything else you could do.

me too...plus I don't have to work in hot sun! and remember to water twice/day. thanks for info
