| So I re-did all of my backyard landscaping. A few weeks ago I tried to start a new lawn on what used to be a veggie garden. Due to grading, I removed the top 5" soil and I tilled whatever is on top, levelled it and then scattered dwarf fescue grass seeds. I kept the whole field (12 x 20') wet for a whole week and new grass starts to grow.
However, I found out that there are some crab grass also growing up. How do I get rid of all these? I don't want my brand new lawn to have weed from the beginning. What do I do? Thanks! |

| After the third mowing you can spot spray the crabgrass with WeedBGone. I would not recommend spraying the whole area with it as young grass can be sensitive to weed killers--later this summer will be ok. The crabgrass and other weeds will die this Fall after the first frost, then overseed. Next Spring put down a pre-emergent and next year you should have a weed free thick lawn. |

| Yes, don't get too anxious. You made a mistake in seeding in the summer. Crabgrass seed was waiting there to get wet for a whole week. You had to do that for your grass seed so now you have crabgrass. This is one of the two big reasons why you should never seed in the summer and/or spring. Fall is the time to seed because at that time the crabgrass seed is no longer sprouting. Do not wait until spring to overseed. Do it at the end of summer when the night time temps start to fall. Oh man. I just noticed you live in Zone 9. Where exactly do you live? This is important. You might not have any fescue left by 4th of July. Fescue is bad in zone 9 and dwarf fescue is twice as bad. But there are some places in zone 9 where fescue is perfect. Need to know where you are. |
