| My lawn has some browning. Although there is no forum that covers both these issues, my conifers do too. I just applied weed and feed and I think it may have made the lawn worse.
I am in New England, in a shady area, but have had lots of water for months. There is no lack of water for lawn or conifers. Yet I am seeing browning on both (limited). I dug down and checked for grubs and saw one. The conifers are in full sun. The lawn is not, but gets enough. Any ideas what may be the problems. Applied moss control 2 months ago and lawn did not take it well....lawn was a mess for many weeks.. |

| Hopefully there will be some other suggestions. The guys here know what they are doing. I've learned a lot from them. If I was to make a guess on the lawn I might think brown patch or the like, if you've had a lot of rain, and if it's been warm. But it could be a host of things. It's hard to tell without pictures, though. Could you describe it more and maybe post some pictures? Also, what type of grass is it? I would guess cool-season of some sort. |

| One grub is not a problem, so that is good. Why did you apply moss control? And why weed and feed? Do you have moss and/or weeds? Is the lawn relatively dense? Since you have some shade I am going to assume you have a fescue based lawn. Kentucky bluegrass likes all the sun it can get. Some varieties of fescue are somewhat tolerant of shade. Do you know what you have? It is getting to be too late in the heat to apply chemical fertilizers. I would be concentrating on a pure fertilizer with no frills. Frills and fertilizer don't mix. Organic fertilizer can be used now and all summer if you think it needs fertilizer. But you should also be looking at a possible disease going on. Pics would help. Take at least one from a distance and at least one very close up so we can see if there are any spots on the blades of grass. |

| I overseeded heavy last fall with "Scotts Exclusive Thermal Blue Kentucky Bluegrass". 3 years ago I dug the whole thing up and started with fescue, so I would say it is a mix of those two but I dont know what cultivar of fescue. I have learned to buy the best seed I can find. I had some tree work done last year and have a little more light now. Moss was a problem in fall and spring - hence the moss control. I am not seeing much moss now. I am in central Massachusetts and we have had a very wet winter, spring and early summer. Some weeds started appearing and I didnt hit the lawn with weed and feed in the spring because I thought the overseed was too young for it. I wanted to overseed again in fall, that is why i applied the weed & feed now. This lawn has been an adventure. I have put in crazy hours & money. I airated with a spike airator in the fall and again in the last month. I do have alot of shade but right now i think I have ample sun. The areas where i have more sun dont really seem any better and may actually look worse with more crab grass. I am not sure how to attach a photo.... |

| Spike aerators can make compaction worse in a way. Core aeration which it removes the plugs are better. How many pounds per 1,000 sq. ft. of seed did you put down when you overseeded? I prefer just weed killer spray. Depending on how many weeds you have you can spray the entire lawn, otherwise spot treatment is the best. But it's harder to find a time to spray in summer because of the higher temperatures. |

| How to post a photo 1. Reduce the image size to 800x600 or so. Giant images make it harder to see and read the thread. 2. Upload your photo to a site that hosts images. Photobucket and Picasa are two that come to mind. 3. Bring the image up on the host site and right click on the image. Among your choices will be Copy Image Location. That will copy the URL to your clipboard. 4. Come to GW and use the following HTML code: The quotes are necessary. |
