Hydroseeding this time of year?...

So this spring one of our state facilities in Lansing, MI had some work done in their lawn on their storm drains. Naturally the heavy equipment used tore up the lawn severely. Well in late April the project wrapped up, they had a crew come in and spread new soil and level off the site. Then the site sat abandoned for a month and a half.

Well today I passed by the area again and there was a contractor on site hydro-seeding the area. I was shocked to see this from a professional lawn service due to the fact that we are just now heading into the hottest part of the year. Am I misunderstanding the proper timing of when to seed a lawn? Is the situation okay because they are hydro-seeding? I am curious to see how the grass grows over the next few months.

It may help to know that the site is also situated along a paved road with curbs and gets direct sunlight with no shade the entire day. I do not believe a sprinkler system is in place as I have traveled this route at every conceivable hour of the day and have never seen wet pavement or any signs of a sprinkler system.

RE: Hydroseeding this time of year?...

I just got hydroseeding done around 6 weeks ago down here in Texas. I don't know that temps in Michigan are right now, but its probably cooler than down here? I'm not sure...

The guys that did the hydro for me also do projects for the city and state, and they said they get jobs all throughout the year, and as long as the customer waters, it will work out. They do vary their hydro mix according to the conditions, though.

They do roadsides where there's no sprinklers, and what the customer generally does is have water trucks go by periodically to water everything down. I guess that must be cheaper than maintaining a sprinkler system for that kind of area?

This time of year is not the correct time of year to be hydroseeding cool season grasses, which is what I would assume they were hydroseeding in Lansing, MI. I would not anticipate a great result from this activity, unless your area experiences a cool, wet summer. Even then, turf disease will be an issue.

SD Gator: You were hydroseeding bermuda in Texas, and this IS the correct time of year to be putting down bermuda seed in your area.
