Peat Moss

I don't care to get involved in the debate about whether peat moss is sustainable or not. I haven't done enough research to have formed a solid opinion either way.

What I do know about peat moss is that it does an excellent job as a top dressing when I'm trying to germinate grass seed. My soil is clay and forms a dry crust on the surface quickly, making it very inhospitable to grass seed. A dusting of peat moss solves the problem effectively. I've found that it does a much better job than straw.

The only issue I have with peat moss is that it is very expensive. I tried shredded paper, and it worked fairly well, but it gets a little matted and I fear that some seeds that germinated never made it through the paper.

What is the best alternative to peat moss for top dressing grass seed?
