The use of straw or peat moss seems to be a cultural practice for a limited number of locations. What the pros do is to loosen the very surface (1/8-inch deep), apply the seed, and then roll the seed down with a water roller. What you are looking for is good seed-to-soil contact. That ensures the seed is nearly surrounded by moisture retaining soil and also minimized the amount of soil the germinated seed must push through to see sunlight. In nature this task is performed by the hooves of grazing and browsing animals.

Right, but when your soil forms a dry crust ten minutes after a heavy rain, you have to use a mulch.

Like you, I will not provoke an off topic discussion about peat moss. I do have an opinion but it has nothing to do with your question. However, my experience with peat moss has not been such that I would use it to hold water. I don't know why but it seems to be hydrophobic in my use.

Have you heard of using shampoo to make your soil more absorbent? Search this forum for more information. I am not suggesting it for your grass seed, but once it is established it might be helpful.
