What's Happening to my Bermuda?

Sod laid 10/11. All OK until 2 weeks ago. Brown patches are growing. Very hot temps last week and the next two weeks (100+). Have been watering these spots a lot, but no help. Disease, fungus, grubs?

Check for grubs. Google it...

Thanks. I tried to roll back a 1 sq. ft. section on the edge of the brown area. I cut about 3" down on 3 sides, and the roots were strong preventing me from easily rolling it. Really had to cut the section loose. No grubs were seen under the sod, or in the sod that was rolled back.

There are two more smaller areas to the left of this one. Never had a dog pee problem before, but it's always possible. These areas are at the very western edge of my front lawn.

RE: What's Happening to my Bermuda?

I hope this doesn't turn into an argument over dogs. I understand the emotions, but I am trying to save a very expensive investment, and I need all the knowledge available on this forum to help.

If this is not a dog urine issue, or grubs, what else "could it" be, and what is the best way to analyze the problem? Is there anything I could try now to see if it helps?

RE: What's Happening to my Bermuda?

It looks like a burn to me. I have three female dogs and I see urine burns all the time. The thing is, none of my dogs ever visit the same spot twice, much less multiple times, which is what it would take to create that burn.

Your dog may be more habitual than mine. Watch her and see if she likes that spot. Notice that I said "she". Male dogs squirt all over everywhere marking their territory. They also like trees, fence posts, and other places where it's not so much a problem for the lawn. If you have a male dog, he's not likely to be the cause.

Is that a property line there? Any chance your neighbor could have done something? Accidentally, I'm sure, but if you haven't spilled anything there, it's at least something to consider.

RE: What's Happening to my Bermuda?

I have no dogs, just cats. My neighbor's dog is always fenced in their back yard. Yes, it is a property line. I have been watching for others who may be walking their dogs by my house and see very few, and they are not let up into my lawn. As I said, this all stated a few weeks ago. I noted the patches, when they were smaller, turning blue-ish gray (dry) and watered that area profusely. The blu-gray turned to brown, and the patches grew. As I said, all has been well until 2 weeks ago when the hot 100+ temps set in. Perhaps unrelated, but makes me wonder.

RE: What's Happening to my Bermuda?

Every summer I'll get a mystery dead spot or 2. They always grow back, but it still irks you.

Maybe the heat exposed a localized dry spot. Have you checked the soil in that spot to see if it is even taking in the water you've been putting down?

You may find the soil in that spot to be dry as a bone despite your attempts at watering.

RE: What's Happening to my Bermuda?

Yes, I checked and they are not dry. The soil was moist, at least down to the 3" I dug into yesterday.

One of the reasons I'm somewhat paranoid, is that the great St. Augustine lawn we had for 17yrs died 2 years ago, and it all started with brown spots. Locals said that St. Augustine was hit hard by root rot in this area. When we removed the large over mature tree in the front yard, we put in the Bermuda, as there is no shade at all, all day.

RE: What's Happening to my Bermuda?

I apologize. Had I read closer I would've seen where you've already dug around.

Still, I'd probe deeper into the soil. 6-8 inches or so. As deep as your longest screwdriver. :)

Fertilized lately?

RE: What's Happening to my Bermuda?

The blue/gray description is the way my urine burns start out. Due to the shape and your lack of a dog, I'd rule out urine burn, but the description does match a burn of some sort.

Bermuda loves heat and the rest of the lawn looks Ok. I'd rule that out too, unless maybe something was spilled there weeks ago and didn't burn until it got hot. I'm really grasping for straws here. If you don't know what might have burned it, I sure don't know. I'm more or less talking out loud to give you things to think about and maybe something will strike a chord with you.

For now, go whack that dead grass down. Let more light get down to where the new grass will regrow. (I'm being optimistic for you on the regrowth.) When my urine burns start to repair themselves, they don't just regrow from the sides, I get new grass blades coming up inside the burned areas. Can I assume that you're worried enough that you've been on hands and knees inspecting the area at dirt level?

RE: What's Happening to my Bermuda?

TruGreen fertilized 5 weeks ago, and will be back Monday for the next round. Yes, I have been nose to ground (wonder what the neighbors thought?). I'm quite sure nothing was spilled here. Here's a wider shot that shows the 2 major areas. the 3d area nearby is quite small.

RE: What's Happening to my Bermuda?

Is there a possibility that a vehicle was parked on this side of that trailer and the exhaust from such vehicle has burned the grass? Just a wild guess.

 o
RE: What's Happening to my Bermuda?

Very, very remote possibility, but I've never seen it parked with the exhaust facing the grass, and I am home all day.

 o
RE: What's Happening to my Bermuda?

I don't know if this means a hoot, but the patches have turned from straw colored into a darker brown. Getting worse?

 o
RE: What's Happening to my Bermuda?

Did TG spill some fert there? I once did that with some 46-0-0, years ago when I was a neophyte. Looked just like that.

 o
RE: What's Happening to my Bermuda?

Don't think so, but if they did it took 4 weeks until it turned brown. More spots are showing up to the right of the area shown in the pics. This problem is spreading fast. I am at a loss on what to do, or who to call.

If this is a drainage problem, all was well with water retention until 2 weeks ago. That's how long it took for this mess to appear. If this is a grub problem, I can't find any grubs. I fear I could lose my entire 9 month old lawn.

I had one small brown patch that showed up in another area several months ago. Still hasn't grown back. The few landscapers/TG that looked at it and rattled off a list of all the things it "could be" but had no real answers.

I thank everyone on this forum for their assistance. I just wish I knew where to get true professional help locally

RE: What's Happening to my Bermuda?

I went back through this thread and did not see where you are located. Where are you located? I'm thinking that if possible, you need to take a sample to a lab for analysis. The sample would be taken from the area where it appears to be spreading (i.e. area of current activity). There have been times where I have driven 2 hours to take a live sample to Dr. Bruce Martin for an accurate analysis. When it's that important, you do what you have to do.

I'm in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area of Texas. Thanks.

Looks like a dogs favorite area to pee to me, or something spilled there.

RE: What's Happening to my Bermuda?

UPDATE: The TG manager came out today. He tested the soil for moisture and was good down to about 6", but we had some pretty good rain yesterday. His "opinion" was that the brown areas were due to the grass drying out in those spots , and they when I water heavily it stopped further drying and the area turned "dormant." He inspected deep into the areas and tiny bits of new growth could be seen in many areas. Not much, but new growth. He attributed it to the last two weeks of 104-107 degree temps, no rain, and my hand watering (no irrigation system yet). he allowed for the slight possibility of a fungus, so we sprayed for that today just to be sure.

He also told me I had trained my Bermuda too high (2 3/8"), and gave me some advice on how to scalp it and maintain it at a lower height next spring. I did scalp it this spring, but it looked so bad when I did, I set the mower higher when the tops turned green because I didn't want to go back to brown again (dumb mistake).

My question now is, as it has been recommended by one member to mow those areas down to let the sun get to it, is it wise to do that with the two hottest/driest months in TX upon us?

I do want to add that the dry brown areas have spread far to the right of the photo in a very linear fashion all the way to my back fence on the west side of the house, and based on my observations/experience, and my neighbors observations, no dogs have been using these areas to urinate.

I value all the opinions expressed on this forum, and I thank all for their suggestions/ideas. I just need to know whether I should chop these areas down now when the heat/drought of Texas summer has just begun. Thanks.

 o
RE: What's Happening to my Bermuda?

I would maintain the current height of cut through this season, and then scalp it down to 1" next Spring. What was the name of the fungicide that they sprayed?

 o
RE: What's Happening to my Bermuda?

They sprayed it with LAAAAK Heritage Fungicide. Brown Spot, Leaf Spot, Take-all patch.
