| I have bermuda grass and just moved in to our new home at the beginning of April. the front lawn is starting to brown and it just keeps getting worse. I water only once a week but water it very deep. It doesnt seem to be growing at all, I have only had to mow it once because even the green parts of it just sit there stunted, meanwhile the backyard needs to be mowed every week.
I have fertilized the lawn once with a high nitrogen fertilizer at the beginning of may since it was about 60-70% green and looked ready but maybe it was too much and is burnt now?
Any ideas? I have included a pic of the front yard browning |

| also, the fertilizer I used was 26-0-5 and i did the calculations to make sure it was getting 1 lb per 1000sq ft, it did not contain any weed killer. |

| More water. If you are watering deep but your roots are not down to that point yet then the grass will look much like what you have. You may find that you have to water every 3 or 4 days. I would start watering more often and give it another shot of fertilizer. Fertilize every 30-45 days. |

| I see a significant slope. When you water deeply, do you just water all at once? I imagine you're losing a bunch to runoff if so. Try cycle and soak. Hit each zone for 5-8 minutes then wait an hour and do it again. Most newer irrigation panels support this function. |

| thanks for the replys guys.. I thought about the slope runoff (yes I do currently water all at once) but My backyard has an even larger slope and the hill is growing very well.. I will try watering more often and see if she perks up. Is the grass too stressed to re-fertilize? |

| I don't know about too stressed to fertilize but I would wait until I was sure the roots were working right. Do you see runoff when you water? If you do, then stop watering immediately and let the water soak in. Then restart in 15 minutes until you get runoff again. Cycle like that until you get an inch of water. Thank you so much for the picture. It really speaks a thousand words. Also out of curiosity, what direction were you looking when you took that picture? Please don't say north. |

| Yes I see runoff into the street when I water for about 15 minutes so I will try cycling the waterings like you said. And no, that picture was taken late in the day and I took the picture facing south. |

| No get it hydrated and greened up before anymore fertilizer. You do not want to force grass to do something when conditions are not right. You might try a SOAKER HOSE. |

| If you do try a soaker hose, it is easy to apply water too fast even with that. What I have done very successfully is set the faucet to a trickle that amounts to 1 cup of water per minute. Then connect the soaker hose and let it run for a full week. If you can, let it run for 3 full weeks, continuously. If I remember my math, that amounts to 800 gallons per week. |

| My grass looks the same in certain spots. I just moved into a new home and the builder didn't really water the new sod which is Bermuda and so I'm going to do it myself. I'm new at this since I'm a first time home owner in NC(charlotte) and I wanted to ask when are the best times to water grass or does it matter? I've heard someone say you shouldn't past 5:00 p.m. is that true? and is it okay to water your grass say twice in one day? morning and then evening? |

| Yeah look like drought stress to me too. My yard looked just like this when I moved onto the property it wasnt gitn enough water so I watered twice a week for a couple of months now it grows so fast its not funny. |

Macdawgg, I've read all kinds of things on when to water. I think it is a local custom with local reasons. If you have high humidity and grass prone to fungal infection, you might want to water starting some time after 3am. The reason for not watering in the middle of the day is waste due to evaporation. Otherwise, Mother Nature can come at you any time of day or night and it doesn't seem to cause any problems. |
