Question regarding MN lawn repair

This is my first post on gardenweb, but I have lurked the forum on a few occasions in the past so hopefully you'll take it easy on me:) I'm posting because I have couple of questions about lawn repair on my MN lawn. I've been a homeowner for about 5 years now and have been trying to get things in shape, but had a bit of a setback this last year.

Last year we had a drought throughout the summer months and crabgrass took over in a few different spots in my yard, most notably in my front yard next to the driveway. Winter came, crabgrass died, and then I was left with a 30'x20' patch of dead lawn in my front yard. I didn't do anything about the dead spot until about 6 weeks ago when I decided to remove the 30'x2' strip of rock along that same side of my driveway next to the dead spot and turn it to grass.

Here's where I'm at now: I've removed the rock, dug up the sod in the dead area and brought in about 3 yards of black dirt to fill in where I removed the rock and dead plant material. I had planned on reseeding but I'm having second thoughts since everywhere I read that it is ill-advised to seed cold-climate grass until the end of the summer.

My questions:
What's the best way to smooth out the dirt I brought in?
Should I wait until fall to seed?
If so, what do you recommend I do with this bare spot until then?

Thanks,

Andrew

RE: Question regarding MN lawn repair

1. I've found the best way to smooth out larger dirt/soil areas is to use a garden rake to soften the upper couple of inches and to rough level and then drag a 4x6 piece of chain link fence (I've found that two pieces on top of one another works very well) over it repeatedly until level. Then lightly/mist water it for a few days.
2.Yes. There really isn't any other choice. Even sod isn't a realistic option in the heat of summer.
3. Put in stakes and put up cord to keep people from walking on it and use RU to kill any weeds and wait for fall. You could get a soil test and add any needed ammendments while you wait for fall.

@grass1950 - Thanks for the tips!

Are there any places online you can recommend for soil testing or is that something I should be able to find locally?
