Soil test kit

I'm having some trouble with my lawn this summer. I'm getting brown spots and its not looking very green all around.
So I decided to buy a soil test kit off Amazon. Am I supposed to test the soil (3000 sq ft of lawn in front and back yards total) from different areas then average the numbers?
Or do I treat different areas of lawn with its own special requirements?

The kits that cost less than $20 will only do pH and they mostly test the pH of the water you use. The kits that cost more than $20 are a waste of money because you can get the equivalent of a $100 test (at most universities) from Logan Labs in Ohio for $20. They provide the best and most reliable soil testing available.
