If you look at this image you can see by cutting the stolen you start new growth despite the height you mow. Basically you tighten the turf otherwise the stolen as I'm sure you've seen them grow like long weeds. Cut the stolen and its forced to make a new crown. I'll put it this way if you don't verticut you have longer stolons with less green grass if you cut them the they jump shorter distances bridging the gaps in your lawn.
