| OK, I know this question must have come up in the past but I couldn't find it in a cursory search or in the FAQ, so here goes:
I live in the metro Atlanta area and the highs are usually around 90-95 degrees this time of the year, sometimes it is even hotter than that. There are some really nasty weeds in my lawn that I would like to kill with a herbicide. (One of these weeds is Virginia buttonweed, and it is almost impossible to remove it manually.) Problem is, most of the labels on the herbicide bottles say not to use the product when "temperatures are above 90 (or sometimes 85) degrees". There are really two questions here: 1)Does this mean that it can be applied in the morning or the evening when temperatures are below the maximum recommended temperature range, or does it mean that when the temperature within the day is at or above the maximum recommended temperature range? 2)Is it the effectiveness of the herbicide that is diminished by the higher temperatures or is it that the weed quits growing, and thus won't take up any of the herbicide? And if someone could explain the process whereby a turf grass is damaged by a herbicide used in hot weather that'd be most helpful. It might keep some of us from making a big mistake. |

| It means if the high is going to be above 85 for the day do not use. What will happen is that not only will you kill the weeds but you will also kill the grass. You can either wait until daytime temps drop or mix up a solution at half strength apply to a small area (3"x3") at night and see what happens over the next few days. If the weeds die and not the grass expand the test area. If the grass also dies wait until weather cools. |

| I will add that Weed-B-Gone is the product i was referring to |

| Weed-B-Gone is one of the culprits in this. Follow the label instructions. I usually tell people 80 degrees F just to be sure. |
