Remove the the 1/2" to 8" rock. Some smaller rocks can stay in your yard, if you are lazy. Not in mine.

I've renovated my lawn twice (deep tillage). Removed hundreds of pounds of rocks, and some metal debris from my yard.

Get rid of the junk the first time. You will get better results, and make it easier the next time.

You won't get grass to grow over larger rocks. We had a spot that I could never get to grow for a few years. After researching here, I dug down 3" or so and found a
1' x 1' x 1" thick flat rock. Removed it and no growing issues since in that spot.

One thing that has not been mentioned is where you live. In some places to remove all of the rocks is impossible. Your lot may be an old (millions not 10 years old) stream bed.

The best you can hope for is to remove those large rocks down to 8" to 12" below the surface and forget the rest. Small rocks a couple of inches below the soil surface will not be a problem.

I know one farmer who plowed his fields for years, then one day hit a rock. When he finally got it out it was over 6' in diameter.

It has been known to happen that the contracted buried a lot of construction debris, or the people who did the original lot grading buried a lot of tree debris. These areas will always be a problem.

Long before my area became a subdivision the original owner used the back of my lot as a private dump. Since it is mostly buried, and I plan to leave the area natural, I have not touched it except to remove the more obvious. I have been afraid to start to remove it as I don't know what is there. Not knowing what was dumped, I could face large disposal cost if there was something that the government consider hazardous. Also this area of the county was owned by a known moonshiner, so it is possible that I could find his completion if I dig too much. Bottom line it is not worth the hassle to get rid of it.

Not acceptable - spend the $$ and get rid of them!
